English-Speaking Driving Schools in Osaka & Kansai (2026 Guide)
· GaimenGo Team

English instruction is rarer in Kansai than Tokyo. Here are the schools that offer it, what to verify before enrolling, and the sequence that saves money.
Kansai has a large and growing foreign population, but far fewer driving schools advertising genuine English instruction than Tokyo. The realistic strategy in Osaka is a split one: do your theory in English online, and choose a school for practical skills based on how much Japanese you can tolerate in the car.
Understand what you are buying
If you already hold a foreign licence, you are doing foreign licence conversion (外免切替 / gaimen kirikae) — document screening, eyesight test, knowledge test, and for most nationalities a practical test at the licence centre. What a school sells you here is *practice* on a course, usually a few hours.
If you are starting from zero, you enrol in a designated school (指定自動車教習所) for the full curriculum.
The distinction matters financially: graduating from a designated school exempts you from the practical test only on the from-zero route, not on gaimen kirikae. Nobody will correct this for you if you assume otherwise.
Osaka and Kansai options
JYC Driving School — Kyoto and Osaka
JYC is the clearest English option in Kansai. It is a private English driving school rather than a designated one, with over two decades of experience teaching foreign drivers, and it runs lessons in both Kyoto and Osaka. It can also deliver English lessons at approved schools following the official curriculum, and offers lessons aimed at foreign licence conversion.
Because it is not a designated school, JYC cannot issue a graduation certificate. That is irrelevant for gaimen kirikae practice — where no such exemption exists anyway — and it is the main reason to pair JYC with a designated school if you are starting from zero.
Best for: conversion practice, or English coaching alongside a Japanese school.
Minato Driving School — Bentenchō, Osaka
Minato is widely mentioned among foreign learners in Osaka and is known for scheduling flexibility, including short intensive graduation timelines. English-language learner testimonials describe English textbooks and written materials.
We could not independently confirm the current scope of that English support, and testimonials describe one person's experience at one point in time. If English materials are the reason you are choosing Minato, confirm it directly before enrolling.
Yuasa Driving School — Wakayama
Yuasa is in Wakayama but actively markets to international learners from Osaka and Hyogo, and is one of the few official schools in the region promoting lessons in English for non-Japanese speakers.
The trade-off is the commute. For a from-zero course spanning weeks, that is a real cost — worth it only if the language support is genuinely better than what you can get locally.
Yaenosato Driving School — Osaka
A large designated school in eastern Osaka with multilingual information for foreign residents. Confirm English lesson availability directly; multilingual *information* and English *lessons* are not the same thing.
Questions to ask any Kansai school
- "Are the lessons in English, or only the printed materials?"
- "Do you support 外免切替 practical test practice?"
- "Is the English instructor guaranteed, or subject to availability that day?"
- "What is the total cost including extra lessons if I need them?"
Ask question 3 specifically. In regions where only one or two instructors speak English, "we support English" can mean "one instructor does, when he is free."
The Osaka strategy that works
Because Kansai options are fragmented, sequence it:
- Learn the rules in English first. Japanese road rules contain plenty that is genuinely counter-intuitive — the left-priority rule at uncontrolled intersections, two-stage right turns, the difference between 駐車禁止 and 駐停車禁止. Learning these from a Japanese-language explanation while also learning to drive is doing two hard things at once.
- Pass the knowledge test. It is free to prepare for and costs you nothing but time.
- Buy practical lessons last, for the part that actually needs a car.
GaimenGo covers step one and two at no cost: the Gaimen Kirikae question bank in English, timed mock exams in the exam format, and real road-sign images. Your dashboard shows which categories you are weakest in, so if you do buy lessons you know what to spend them on.
