If you drive in Japan, an ETC (Electronic Toll Collection) card is essential. It lets you pass through toll gates without stopping, saves you money with discounts, and makes long drives much more pleasant.

What is an ETC Card?

An ETC card is a small IC card that you insert into an ETC device mounted in your car. When you drive through a toll gate, the system automatically deducts the toll fee from your linked account. No cash, no stopping, no hassle.

How to Get an ETC Card

The most common way is through a credit card application. Here is a popular option:

  1. Apply for the Rakuten credit card (free annual fee for the first year). You can apply online even as a foreign resident. During the application, select the option to also receive an ETC card. The ETC card will be delivered separately from your credit card — usually a few days later.

Getting the ETC Device

You need a physical ETC device installed in your car.
