Motorcycle License in Japan: Classes and Road Rules

Japan splits two-wheelers into several license classes, and the road rules that apply to them differ from cars in ways the test asks about. Here is what each class covers and what to study.
Motorcycles and scooters in Japan are subject to unique rules that every rider must know.
License Categories Japan has specific motorcycle licenses: 50cc or under (原付 - gentsuki), 51-125cc (小型二輪), 126-400cc (普通二輪), and over 400cc (大型二輪). Each requires a separate license or endorsement.
Helmet Requirements Wearing a helmet is MANDATORY for all motorcycle riders and passengers in Japan. No exceptions.
Lane Positioning Motorcycles must ride on the left side of the lane. Riding side-by-side (並進) in the same lane is prohibited unless a sign specifically permits it. Each motorcycle must maintain its own lane position.
Two-Step Right Turn Motorcycles under 126cc must make a two-step right turn at intersections: first go straight to the far corner, then turn right when the light changes. This is a major test topic.
Prohibited Roads Certain expressways and tunnels prohibit motorcycles under 125cc. Always check road signs.
Passengers Only motorcycles over 125cc can carry passengers. The passenger must wear a helmet. Additionally, the rider must have held their motorcycle license for at least 1 full year before carrying a pillion passenger — this rule is frequently tested.
